Kyalami Country Club: Where Golf Meets Country Serenity

There are few places in Gauteng where you can truly leave the hum of the city behind without venturing far from home. Just 18 kilometres from Sandton City, Kyalami Country Club offers an escape into a calm, countryside oasis – a place where the air is fresh, the surroundings peaceful, and the sound of birdsong replaces the rush of traffic.

Nestled between Johannesburg and Pretoria, this prestigious parkland course is a hidden gem in the heart of Midrand. From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted not just by the natural beauty of gently undulating fairways and pristine greens, but by a sense of belonging that’s hard to come by elsewhere. This is more than just a golf club. It’s a community.

A Course That Challenges and Charms

Ranked in South Africa’s top 40 golf courses – currently at an impressive #35 nationally – Kyalami Country Club has earned its reputation not just through charm and aesthetics, but through quality, resilience, and constant improvement.

Originally established in 1955 to serve the Jewish community in Johannesburg, Kyalami’s layout has matured beautifully over the decades. A major upgrade in the 1990s – driven by dedicated club stalwarts Brian Wilson and George Adelaine – laid the foundation for a world-class course. The greens were rebuilt in 2011, and the club took a forward-thinking step by investing in a massive water storage upgrade, ensuring sustainability and lush conditions year-round. Today, nine of the 18 holes feature water hazards, adding strategy and intrigue to every round.

But what truly sets Kyalami apart is its superb collection of par 4s. Each hole is a study in design, variety, and challenge. From long, testing stretches to clever doglegs and subtle elevation changes, no two holes feel alike – and none can be considered “weak.” With six par 4s exceeding 400 metres, Kyalami is a course that demands creativity and rewards precision.

Legacy Meets Lifestyle

The club’s rich heritage includes a hole-in-one on opening day in 1955 and an exhibition match between legends Bobby Locke and Peter Thomson in 1956. In the 1990s, it played host to three consecutive South African Women’s Open championships, cementing its place in local golf history.

More recently, the club has embraced a new era under progressive management. Upgraded facilities, refreshed clubhouse as well as a new Restaurant, and a renewed focus on family golf, junior development, and inclusive events have made Kyalami a place for all ages and levels of golfer.

Whether you're a seasoned competitor, a weekend enthusiast, or a parent introducing the next generation to the game, Kyalami offers you the tools to thrive. PGA teaching professionals provide lessons for all skill levels, while league golf, women’s events, and mixed competitions foster a true sense of community.
